The announcement followed a recent phone call between Sheinbaum and Carney, after their meeting at the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alberta.
During the call, they agreed to strengthen bilateral cooperation on trade, energy, and security, with an emphasis on upholding the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). They also shared their countries’ strategies in response to letters threatening tariffs issued by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Carney and Sheinbaum reaffirmed the importance of protecting North American competitiveness and rules-based trade, with an eye toward the USMCA review scheduled for 2026.
The conversation highlighted an expanded relationship that goes beyond trade, encompassing energy, agriculture, security, and environmental protection.
Sheinbaum expressed her support and solidarity with Canada over the wildfires affecting its territory, while Carney thanked her for “the brave work of more than 200 Mexican firefighters” deployed in support.
Although the date of Carney’s visit has not yet been confirmed, the meeting will be coordinated in the coming weeks by the diplomatic teams of both countries.
The visit is expected to include working groups with government officials, business leaders, and strategic sectors, following up on commitments made at the G7 summit. The main focus will be defending the USMCA, developing strategies to address U.S. tariffs, and deepening economic and energy cooperation.
The upcoming visit by the Canadian prime minister underscores President Sheinbaum’s international position as a proponent of active diplomacy and a strong commitment to multilateralism. The trip will be key to consolidating bilateral agreements and preparing joint responses to global challenges.
